CT Exclusive Porsche Cayenne

The latest 2015 Porsche Cayenne is only a few days away from being officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show 2014 and aftermarket tuner CT Exclusive has decided now is the time to release their tuning program for the pre-facelift Cayenne.

As with essentially all Cayenne tuning packages, the one from CT Exclusive is centred around the bodykit. It adds flared wheel arches, a brand new fascia incorporating different LED daytime running lights, front grille, fog lights, air intakes and bumper.

At the rear, the car has been fitted with a rooftop spoiler, an aggressive rear diffuser, quad tailpipes and a new bumper.

Budget Driverless Car

Google’s driverless car dominates the headlines, but the reality is that it’s unlikely to be available any time soon and it’s certainly not going to be within your price range. But one startup is hoping, at least, to change the latter. Cruise Automation, based in San Francisco (where else?), is developing a car automation accessory that will retail for $10,000.

Kyle Vogt, the founder of the project, is hoping to start installing his “RP-1” invention onto cars early next year. It only currently works  on an Audi A4 or S4, but Vogt is hoping to modify the device so it can be retrofitted on to any car. It works largely in the same way Google’s driverless car works in that it has multiple sensors that can scan the immediate area for routes and potential collisions.

Vogt describes his invention as a “highway pilot”. He essentially means that it will work as a driving aid, rather than a system to fully takeover driving responsibility. Users will be able to switch on the system by tapping a button on an inbuilt interface in the car, and then let system take over. The driver can regain control of the car by tapping on the brake pedal or by placing their hands on the steering wheel.

Incredibly, the project only began in November 2013. Vogt and his team have worked around the clock to make it into a reality and they plan to start installing it onto cars early next year.

DAIMLER TO BUY A STAKE IN MV AGUSTA

The rumors are unconfirmed, but it appears MV Augusta will have a German partner soon, as Daimler is in talks to buy a minority stake of that venerable Italian company.  As youll recall, MV was owned by Harley-Davidson for two years, did nothing with the brand, then handed it back on a silver platter to the Castiglioni family two years later...strangely, the same family who took Aermacchi from H-Ds hands, decades prior.  When Harley dumped MV in 2010, they paid all that companys debt as part of the deal, reportedly losing many Millions in the process.  MV Agusta has been on shaky ground since, but has an excellent engine, chassis, and styling, and does well in World Superbike racing.  The financial strength of Daim ler could be a real godsend to the small Italian company.  So, whats up with German auto companies buying Italian motorcycle brands?

When Audi bought Ducati in 2012, the world scratched its head - a German car company adding a struggling, small production Italian sportbike to its highly successful line of cars?  It took a deeper look into Audis DNA to find a connection - the highly successful DKW racers of the 1930s through 1950s, screaming two-strokes on which Ewald Kluge won the Isle of Man Lightweight TT in 1938, with an 11-minute lead over the next bike, an Excelsior. Between 1925 and 1956, when DKW, NSU, BMW, Gilera, and Moto Guzzi disbanded their factory GP teams, DKW won more German championships (38) than any of its rivals.  In the 1930s, of course, DKW was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, and part of the Auto Union (an alliance of Wanderer, Horch, DKW, and Audi), which had a deep interest in motorsport.  Auto Union became simply Audi after Volkswagen acquired the name in 1964.  DKW continued to support racing, in motocross, into the 1970s, with successful ISDT entries and motocross championship contenders, all lightweight two-strokes.

So much for Audi.  But Daimler?  Its only motorcycle connection, if you can call it that, was a mobile test-bed for the 1885 Otto engine (the first four-stroke gasoline-powered engine) called the Reitwagen.  The Reitwagen had two big wheels, and two smaller ones for balance, and was clearly never intended to be a moto-cycle, ie, a powered vehicle using the unique physics of the two-wheeler.  The Reitwagen was a drais (an early, wooden-framed, pedal-less bicycle) altered to accommodate a platform holding the motor, on which the engine (designed by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach) sat, supported by two smaller wheels.  It was ridden 8 miles on Nov 10, 1885, before the saddle caught fire, and Daimler turned his attention to improving his engine, for installation in carriages, airships, and boats.

So, why take a stake in MV Agusta?  Apparently its the Mercedes sports-tuning branch AMG which will attach to MV, and with its considerable engine and chassis tuning experience, we may see an interesting cross-pollination of technology between the two companies.  The motivation might be pure jealousy, with BMWs long-standing motorcycle connection, and Audis ret urn to the fold via Ducati.  Mercedes-Benz has no history with motorcycles, but who can resist the cool of owning a very fast bike?

Toyota Vios 2015

Toyota has confirmed the Vios for India in 2015. The 2015 Toyota Vios will be positioned in C2 segment and will fill the gap between Etios sedan and Toyota Corolla.

Toyota will bring the Vios in C2 segment. The Vios will compete with segment leader Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Volkswagen Vento.

Musk Batteries Are Expensive

"The biggest single challenge for electric vehicles is affordability." -- Elon Musk

This comment was made during a recent shareholder's meeting, reported by Inside EVs.

Musk thinks Tesla can produce in "three to four years" an EV which has sufficient range to be broadly practical, which is affordable to a large number of customers. 

Which is probably something like a $30,000 vehicle which has a real world range of 200miles or better.  Based on the sales numbers of the current crop of 100mile vehicles, which aren't great, I am guessing the range needs to double before the masses really take notice.

But doubling the range of a car like the Leaf will add approx. $10,000 to its price, at cur rent battery costs of approx $500/kWh.

So the billion dollar question is, how will Tesla get ~45kWh of batteries for $10,000, leaving them $20,000 for the base vehicle and profit?

Lucky if you can find a months old Q5 with a diesel engine, as it was introduced in January 2013. With 175hp, the 2.0 diesel is fast yet friendly with fuel.

If you want a gasoline, you are only confined with one option: a turbocharged 2.0 which has 208hp (for 2009-2012 models) or 222hp (2013 units). It is quick in speeding up but quick in drinking fuel.

Basic models have at least cruise control, 18 inch alloys, six airbags, ABS brakes with hill hold assist, stability program, front and rear sensors, tire pressure monitor, front and rear fog lamps, automatic active headlamps, roof rails, leather seats, power mirrors with fold and heat, power tailgate, six disc changer, hands free phone, keyless entry, alarm, and on board computer. Premium models adds 19 inch alloys, rear view camera, blind spot system, moon roof, and a Bang and Olufsen sound system. Off road styling package and S line equipment packages are available, so you might happen to see them installed in the unit you were eyeing.
