Ways to stay safe this Halloween

Over 600 million pounds of candy is purchased every year for Halloween.

Its a holiday that is filled with laughter, screams and early morning toothaches. Its also the only holiday that warrants kids to go from house to house asking for bite-sized goodies with just 3 simple words. Whether youre driving or sitting at home on All Hallows Eve, heres a few tips on how to keep the little ones safe!

Chilling at Home:

• Make sure all outdoor lights are in working order and replace those that arent
• Remove anything that people could trip over, like lawn decorations, bikes, garden hoses, etc.
• Just as a precaution, keep pets in a separate room and away from trick-or-treaters

Out to Trick:

• Should go without writing, but young children should always be accompanied by an adult
• Never cut across yards
• Always stay on the sidewalk or path. If none is available, walk in the direction of traffic and stay as far to the left as possible
• Only go to homes with a porch light and never go inside
• Cross the street in a group and always use the crosswalk.
• Dont assume cars will stop. Make sure they see you before crossing in front of them.
• Older kids should carry a cell phone for quick commun ication.

Dressing Up:

• Make sure buy only flame resistant costumes, wigs and accessories.
• Flashlights must accompany the group when walking through the neighborhood.
• Wear bright costumes or reflective tape so that they are visible to motorists
